Integration of Science and Language Arts in Elementary Software: Instrumentation and Analysis

7 (1) 2008

This study examined elementary science and language arts software programs to
determine the degree of use of integrated themes. Using a twenty-item review instrument based
on criteria derived from a literature review of integrated instruction in the subjects of science and
language arts, a total of 141 (including pilot study n = 12) software were analyzed. Findings
revealed that there were more science software with integrated language arts themes than
language arts software with integrated science themes. Educators can use the findings as a
reference point when selecting software that could be effective in integrating science and
language arts in the elementary classroom. It is apparent that there is a definite need to evaluate
software prior to classroom use in order to promote beneficial educational practices.
